SyFy ran two weekend marathons, airing a lot of episodes. SyFy was an early contender in fan discussions because it had picked up other shows, including the immensely popular Stargate SG-1 show (which led to two SyFy spinoffs).ĪBC Television Entertainment, which had acquired the rights to the show and brought in Raimi to Executive Produce, did approach SyFy about saving Legend of the Seeker.

Blogs and forums fired up with massive discussions in which fans shared ideas about how to save the show by persuading other networks to pick it up. When word of the Tribune cancellation reached online fandom they quickly organized a Save Our Seeker campaign, raising thousands of dollars for advertising and related projects. Nonetheless, the fan community’s enthusiasm for the show was probably responsible for its own undoing. The Sword of Truth books enjoyed additional success because of the exposure that the show brought to them. Many fans were also active on Facebook and Twitter. A large fan community had nonetheless grown up on several Web forums, and there were fan blogging communities on LiveJournal, Blogspot, and WordPress. At the time many fans knew nothing about the Tribune bankruptcy it wasn’t relevant to them until their show was cancelled. Rumors of the impending cancellation circulated for weeks. That included dropping expensive shows from its television schedule and Legend of the Seeker was one of the most expensive syndicated shows at the time. In early 2010, with the bankruptcy dragging on, Tribune began cutting costs wherever possible. By December 2008 Tribune was forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
But the Tribune Company struggled to make payments on the massive debt Zell had used to buy it. Zell sold off some major assets (including a Major League Baseball franchise) almost as soon as he had control of the company. People were criticizing the deal almost from the start. Whether Zell could have pulled the company through in good times is up in the air. But in 2007 something worse about to happen: the collapse of millions of over-leveraged mortgages, which would lead to the Great Recession of 2008-2010. Advertising revenues for newspapers and television stations have been declining since the 1990s. Part of Zell’s misfortune was to buy a media empire in decline. Morgan and other investment companies, it did not turn out that way. But if his investment seemed shrewd enough to attract capital from investment banks like J.P. Zell is a colorful figure who caused a stir whenever he visited the newspapers and broadcast stations he now owned via incredible mortgage. About 35,000 shareholders (many of them small investors) received money from the leveraged buyout. Zell had owned some media companies before but never anything as large as Tribune. He borrowed the money required to buy all the outstanding shares of the then-publicly traded company. Billionaire investor Sam Zell had bought the company in 2007 in a leveraged buyout. In a phrase: the Tribune Company bankruptcy happened. But in early 2010 1/3 of the American television stations suddenly dropped the show from their schedules, leaving about 800,000 US viewers without means of watching the show on local television. Weekly ratings were strong despite occasional unannounced schedule changes on some television stations. The show was syndicated to several countries, including the United States, where most of the production costs were recovered. Raimi was said to be personally involved in the production of Legend of the Seeker, which Goodkind told his fans would add more details about the world of his novels since the show had to tell episodic stories (even though it followed the books in general themes). These guys did the Hercules and Xena television shows (among others). The show was produced in New Zealand by Ghost House Pictures, the studio owned by Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi. Legend of the Seeker was a very popular television show, running from 2008 to 2010, that was based on Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth novels.
